The Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, faced a prolonged and devastating attack from Russia, lasting 11 hours overnight into Thursday morning. This assault involved drones and missiles, resulting in the death of at least 20 civilians and injuring numerous others. Russia claimed the attack was in retaliation for Ukrainian strikes on oil facilities within its territory.
Loud explosions were heard throughout Kyiv during the night, prompting many residents to seek refuge in subway stations as air raid warnings were issued. By dawn, emergency teams were still sifting through the wreckage of destroyed apartment buildings to locate survivors.
Russian Response and Ukrainian Attacks
Russia’s Defense Ministry issued a statement declaring that the attack was in response to Ukrainian long-range strikes, which have led to significant fuel shortages. These attacks, termed a ’40-day blitz’ by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, have targeted oil refineries, contributing to a fuel crisis that has left many Russians frustrated.
Ukrainian officials aim to push Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate, though Russia’s strategy appears to involve intensified retaliatory bombings. Despite diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, such as those by the Trump administration, progress remains elusive.
Kyiv’s Night of devastation
In Kyiv, over 90 people sustained injuries during the attack, according to city authorities. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the events as a ‘night of horror.’ Damage was reported in 30 locations across the city, with around 20 residential structures affected. The night sky was lit by flashes from exploding drones and missiles, as defensive fire light streaked through the air accompanying loud booms.
In the city’s Desnianskyi district, residents were trapped inside damaged multi-story buildings. In Darnytskyi district, six levels of a high-rise building collapsed.
Russian Justifications and Global Reactions
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov asserted that the bombardment targeted military-linked locations exclusively. However, Russian aerial attacks frequently impact civilian areas, with UN figures citing over 16,000 civilian deaths since the war began.
In Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region, a Russian bombing resulted in the death of a seven-year-old girl and injured four family members.
Ukraine’s air defenses have strengthened somewhat during the conflict. But the country still seeks advanced systems, like the Patriot missile systems, from international partners to better protect against ballistic missiles.
Ukrainian officials stressed that their actions align with self-defense rights under the U.N. Charter, rejecting any justification Russia offers for its strikes.
Continued Conflict and Targets
Ukrainian forces recently targeted a significant Russian oil refinery in Nizhny Novgorod and struck a railway bridge used by Russian forces in the Luhansk region. These attacks are part of a broader strategy to disrupt Russian operations and supply lines.
Recent analysis by the Institute for the Study of War indicates that Russia’s 2026 military offensive has not achieved significant progress compared to the previous year.
