Seventeen-year-old Eugene Dobberfuhl has made a significant contribution to his hometown of South Elgin. He spearheaded the creation of a gaga ball pit at Jim Hansen Park. This initiative served as his Eagle Scout service project.
Dobberfuhl was inspired to build the pit after seeing its popularity in summer camps and school playgrounds. Gaga ball shares similarities with dodgeball. The main goal is to avoid being hit on the feet. The last player remaining in the game wins. “It’s a lot of fun,” Dobberfuhl remarked.
Recounting his experiences at Boy Scouts summer camps, he recalled how the gaga ball pits were extremely popular. He noticed their rising presence in schools over the past few years. Dobberfuhl, a student at South Elgin High School, aimed to earn the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout, a title achieved by only about 5% of Scouts.
Choosing Jim Hansen Park for the project had personal significance to Dobberfuhl. “It’s the park I’ve played at since I was really young,” he said, reminiscing about playing baseball there. The park’s proximity to his family home made it a perfect location.
The gaga ball pit project wrapped in June, marking a milestone in Dobberfuhl’s journey to becoming an Eagle Scout. Completing the service project was crucial to meeting the Eagle requirements. “I’ve just been dedicated to this,” he expressed, noting the satisfaction of achieving his goal.
South Elgin Parks and Recreation welcomed the new gaga ball pit. Director Kim Wascher mentioned it as a valued addition. The district previously benefited from another Eagle Scout-built gaga ball pit in 2020. “It was a nice amenity to add to that park,” Wascher noted.
In spring 2023, Dobberfuhl initiated the project by contacting the South Elgin Park District. He collaborated with Wascher to connect with potential business sponsors for the project’s funding. The $3,000 pit was assembled from a kit with help from his troop and park employees.
The district praised Dobberfuhl’s dedication, recognizing his hard work and leadership. A social media post celebrated his commitment to enhancing the local community. Dobberfuhl expressed satisfaction with his efforts, highlighting the joy the pit brings to park visitors. “Every time I see (the pit) being used, it brings a smile to my face,” he shared.
As Dobberfuhl prepares to leave for college, he reflects on the lasting impact of his contribution. “I hope this pit has a long-lasting impact on kids and people who go to the park every single day,” he said.
