Chicago White Sox third baseman Miguel Vargas expressed his hopes for making it to the All-Star team, acknowledging that while it is a personal goal, the team’s success remains his main focus. Vargas shared these thoughts during a weekend at Rate Field, emphasizing the importance of ending the first half of the season strong and preparing well for the second half.
The All-Star Game is set to take place on July 14 in Philadelphia. The official roster announcement will be made Saturday night. The last time the White Sox had multiple All-Stars was in 2022, when Tim Anderson and Liam Hendriks were selected. This year, Vargas is among several players being considered, aiming to become the first Sox third baseman to make the team since Joe Crede in 2008.
“He’s been so consistent,” commented manager Will Venable on Vargas’s performance. “Last year we saw his abilities in phases. This year, he’s maintained a consistent level due to his offseason work.”
As of Friday, Vargas is leading major-league third basemen in runs. He ranks second in home runs and holds the third spot in RBIs and other key stats. Reflecting on his performance, Vargas states, “I work on consistency with my workouts and preparation, learning from past years to give my best every day.”
White Sox starter Davis Martin also enters the conversation for All-Star honors, being the first homegrown right-handed pitcher since James Baldwin in 2000. Despite a less sharp performance against the Cleveland Guardians, Martin’s record and ERA keep him in contention.
Venable noted, “He’s been our leading pitcher, maintaining a top performance throughout most of this season.” Martin ranks first in AL wins and seventh in ERA, showcasing his consistent contributions.
Further All-Star considerations include shortstop Colson Montgomery and first baseman Munetaka Murakami. Montgomery leads in home runs among shortstops, while Murakami’s early season performance made him a strong candidate, notwithstanding a recent injury.
Discussing Murakami’s status, Venable emphasized the priority of health over All-Star participation. Venable expressed eagerness for the team’s representation in the upcoming All-Star event, recognizing the inevitable mix of excitement and potential disappointment based on final selections.
