Cooper Lutkenhaus led the 800 meters, with the finish line in sight, when Brandon Miller took charge, securing victory at the Prefontaine Classic held at Hayward Field. Miller completed the race in 1 minute, 43.68 seconds, surpassing Lutkenhaus. Expressing admiration, Miller stated on the Peacock broadcast, “He’s an amazing competitor. Everything he does makes me so excited because it pushes me to be better.” At 24 years old, Miller shared his enthusiasm for competing against top athletes like Lutkenhaus.

The competition was marked by narrow finishes. Wilma Nielsen narrowly defeated Juliette Whittaker by 0.18 seconds in the 1,500 meters. In the men’s mile, Liam Murphy used a lean to edge Stefan Nillessen by 0.01 seconds. Parker Wolfe dominated the men’s two-mile race, showcasing his strength in the final stretch.

Olympic champions Valarie Sion and Ethan Katzberg claimed wins in the women’s discus and hammer throw, respectively. In the women’s pole vault, Sandi Morris triumphed over fellow American Katie Moon. Dejanea Oakley secured a victory in the 400 meters, adding to her title won at the NCAA championships at the same venue.

Despite undergoing a dental procedure, Oakley maintained her fitness, expressing pride in her ability to compete.

Anticipation builds for Saturday’s 100-meter race where reigning world champion Melissa Jefferson-Wooden will compete. She has participated in only two individual events this season. Jefferson-Wooden aims to focus on execution, a strategy that has brought her success. The field includes Sha’Carri Richardson from the U.S., Jamaican twins Tia and Tina Clayton, and Shericka Jackson. The race will feature heats, with final rounds occurring two hours later.

The men’s 100 meters is also eagerly awaited. Though Noah Lyles will be absent, Kenny Bednarek, known for a fierce rivalry with Lyles, will compete alongside reigning world champion Oblique Seville from Jamaica. Bednarek expressed high expectations for the year, particularly in the 100 meters.

Competing in Saturday’s events are several 2024 Paris Games champions, including Cole Hocker in the Bowerman mile, Faith Kipyegon in the women’s mile, and athletes like Camryn Rogers and Rojé Stona in field events. The men’s 110 hurdles will feature standout Ja’Kobe Tharp, who set a world record at the NCAA championships.
