FIFA has confirmed that Folarin Balogun will play in the USMNT’s World Cup round-of-16 match against Belgium. The 25-year-old striker’s one-game red-card ban has been suspended.
Balogun received a straight red card in a recent match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. This resulted from a foul on defender Tarik Muharemovic, leading to an automatic one-game suspension based on FIFA’s rules. Typically, a red card and the associated suspension cannot be appealed.
Despite this, Balogun will be eligible to play in the upcoming game at Lumen Field in Seattle. FIFA’s statement read that Balogun received a one-match suspension for breaches of FIFA’s disciplinary code. However, the suspension is on hold for one year. If he commits a similar offense within this period, the suspension will be enforced alongside any additional sanctions for the new infringement.
“Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!” – U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Players learned about the suspension being lifted while traveling to training at the University of Washington. U.S. star Christian Pulisic noted, “Obviously for us, it gives us a boost.” Defender Chris Richards commented on how the team initially doubted the news due to misinformation online.
The article states that suspended sanctions can be lifted during a probation period. This was also seen with Cristiano Ronaldo during the World Cup, where his suspension was altered similarly. Balogun has played an important role in the tournament co-hosts’ games, scoring multiple times, including a noteworthy performance against Paraguay.
While Balogun was not immediately dismissed from the game, referee Raphael Claus reviewed a pitchside monitor before issuing the red card. This decision drew criticism from his team and fans.
World Cup suspensions are final under FIFA’s competition rules, with the disciplinary committee having the authority to extend bans when necessary. Examples include Paraguay’s Miguel Almiron and Qatar’s Assim Madibo.
Head coach Mauricio Pochettino and teammates expressed disappointment with the red card decision. Nevertheless, Balogun’s availability equips the team with their top scorer for the high-stakes match against Belgium, scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Monday.
Analysis: Balogun’s presence is a significant boost for the USMNT. As the team’s leading scorer, his role was crucial. Without him, the coaching staff faced challenging choices concerning whether to move Christian Pulisic to a central role or use other forwards like Ricardo Pepi or Haji Wright. Balogun’s movement and counterpressing add depth to his goal-scoring abilities. Fortunately for the team, alternatives for his absence are no longer necessary.
