White House Criticizes National Museum of American History

A report released on July 4th accuses the National Museum of American History of emphasizing social justice over the role of the founders. The White House’s Domestic Policy Council stated, “To the extent that there is a story told at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, it is not one of ‘the victory of freedom and genius of our country’ but one of regret, tragedy and shame.”

The report, which spans 162 pages, criticizes the museum’s portrayal of American history and is seen as part of the Trump administration’s effort to align the museum’s narrative with what the administration describes as “patriotic” history. The White House has expressed concerns that the museum has become politically biased, detracting from the American story.

Particular focus is placed on the National Museum of American History, with accusations of “ideological capture” and an anti-white bias. The report accuses the museum of minimizing and distorting the nation’s founding, suggesting these actions have transformed the museum’s mission away from historical education toward political activism.

Titled “Saving America’s Story: How Ideological Capture at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History Erases Our Heritage,” the report claims the museum fails to present US history clearly and fairly. It argues that the museum’s leadership uses an ideological framework that divides and discourages citizens rather than treating the American story as a shared national heritage.
