As Europe grapples with record-breaking heatwaves, the resistance to adopting air conditioning has pronounced effects. Recent studies underscore the urgency of this situation, highlighting that more than 20,000 heat-related deaths occurred in just one week.
In France, the toll was significant, with over 2,000 excess deaths reported during the recent heatwave. Belgium also faced substantial losses, noting 1,222 deaths attributed to the extreme heat. Similarly, the Netherlands reported 480 fatalities related to the soaring temperatures.
The reliance on traditional cooling methods, such as cooling off in natural water bodies like the Canal Saint-Martin in Paris, is becoming increasingly inadequate as temperatures continue to rise.
Europe’s ongoing reluctance to invest in widespread air conditioning installation poses substantial public health risks. As heatwaves become more frequent and intense, the continent faces the challenge of adapting its infrastructure to protect its population from the devastating impacts of extreme heat.
