As students return to Evergreen Park Community High School, they will encounter a new mural that merges art and science. Several students chose to dedicate their summer break to this project, adding final details recently.
Inspiration Behind the Mural
Ava Chandler, a senior with interests in art and science, initiated the mural concept. She noticed the absence of science-themed art at the school and suggested the idea to art teacher Tom Guerra. He, along with other students, embraced the proposal. Chandler’s objective was to highlight the connection between art and various scientific disciplines.
Elements of the Mural
The mural features symbols from the periodic table, depictions of Sir Isaac Newton, scientific equations, and an evolutionary sequence. It includes visual elements like the DNA helix, a dinosaur, and an asteroid. This creation process turned summer school sessions into an enjoyable activity for the students involved.
Student Contributions and Experiences
Juliana Bosch, a graduate, highlighted her preference for chemistry and its influence on the mural. She will pursue character design at DePaul University and believes in the importance of detail and accuracy in creative projects. The collaborative effort with peers was particularly rewarding for the students, enhancing their shared passion for art.
Izabella Rodriguez-Acevedo rediscovered her love for painting during this project, also integrating her interest in graphic design. Fellow students Jax Olson, Natalia Mosely, Danny Sommerio, and Wilbur Smith contributed, supported by an EPCHS Foundation grant.
Teacher and Alumni Involvement
Rob Rymek, an industrial technology teacher, constructed the mural frame. Art teacher Tom Guerra, an alumnus of the school, mentored the students. His own experience painting a mural as a student provided a nostalgic connection. Guerra views the mural as an opportunity for art students to gain recognition.
Guerra considers this project a way to give art students a platform to express themselves and connect with peers. The mural serves as a lasting contribution to the school, reflecting the hard work and creativity of its creators.
