The Durban July: A Celebration of Luxury and Inclusion

The Durban July is a significant annual event in South Africa, where the Black majority had long been excluded from the economy. This year marks the 130th anniversary of this horse racing spectacle held in Durban. The event offers a chance to enjoy luxury and high society.

On the day of the races, dishes like oysters, prawns, and sushi were featured prominently. Guests enjoyed the smooth melodies of R&B, with sparkling wine served by attentive bartenders. Attendees showcased elegant attire including sharp suits and elaborate floral headpieces.

Among the attendees was Ashwin Reynolds, a 52-year-old construction company owner. As a youngster, he recorded horse racing bets for his grandfather. Back then, he could not have envisioned experiencing such luxury at a Durban racetrack. During the era of apartheid, which was dismantled in the early 1990s, people of color like Reynolds were barred from elite venues. Reynolds made history in 2021 by becoming the first person of color to own the horse that won the Durban July’s main race.

The event attracts a diverse crowd, united by the excitement of horse racing. The Durban July has grown beyond its initial focus on races. It is now a showcase of music, fashion, and culinary delights. Extravagant displays of wealth offer a temporary escape from the persistent economic and social challenges that many South Africans face.

Marquees, more than a dozen of them, line the track’s grassy infield. These V.I.P. areas require a substantial investment, charging hundreds of dollars for a table. Amenities include luxurious seating, personal bottle service, and sumptuous buffet spreads. These tents also serve as networking epicenters for various sectors such as fashion, music, and politics. Here, emerging artists might meet seasoned producers, and businesspeople might engage with politicians for potential contracts.
