Kirk Cousins is currently the starting quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders, but the team has its sights set on Fernando Mendoza as their future leader. Mendoza made his NFL debut against the New England Patriots in a 45-17 loss, completing 6 out of 8 passes for 48 yards during the closing minutes of the game.

As Mendoza prepares to take over the primary quarterback role, the Raiders realize the need for more robust offensive weapons. Presently, three of the team’s top four pass-catchers are either tight ends — Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer — or a running back — Ashton Jeanty. Tre Tucker, the main receiving threat, has recorded 19 receptions for 274 yards and one touchdown over the five initial games. Despite these numbers, Tucker does not project as a No. 1 wide receiver in the NFL.

Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report has suggested the Raiders consider trading for an established receiver. Knox has identified Jaguars’ Brian Thomas Jr. as a viable option. Thomas has recently found himself less integrated into Jacksonville’s game plan following a standout rookie season.

“The return that Arizona got for Marvin Harrison Jr. could change Jacksonville’s stance on trading Thomas Jr.,” Knox noted, highlighting Thomas’s declining role. Rookie receiver Josh Cameron’s emergence, totaling 117 yards with two touchdowns, might prompt the Jaguars to cash in on Thomas now.

Knox suggests that Jacksonville may seek a return similar to what the Cardinals obtained for Marvin Harrison Jr. Thomas, at only 24 years old, amassed 1,282 yards and ten touchdowns during his rookie year. If Jacksonville’s asking price aligns with what Arizona received from Houston for Harrison, the Raiders should seriously consider the acquisition.

Adding a player like Thomas, who recorded 87 catches for 1,282 yards and ten touchdowns in his inaugural season, could prove advantageous. Currently, the Raiders may not find a receiver of Thomas’s caliber, like prospects K.J. Duff from Rutgers or Duce Robinson from Florida State, with their 2027 second-round pick. Pursuing Thomas would strengthen their offensive lineup as Mendoza assumes the quarterback position.
