Most people save their candy feasts for Halloween, but a black bear in Alaska couldn’t wait. On October 12, this bear bypassed trick-or-treating traditions and went straight for the candy. He appeared at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, a military hospital near Anchorage, Alaska, around 2 a.m.
The bear wandered into the hospital’s emergency department, where he found a bucket of donated Halloween candy. Alaska’s News Source reported that the bear helped himself to the sweets, indulging in what he could find.
The bear probably even ate the candy corn. Gross.
Sherri Warnke, leaving the hospital after visiting her mother, encountered the bear just 30 feet away in a dimly lit corridor. Without a hospital badge, Warnke found herself trapped as all the nearby doors were locked. She cautiously backed away, hoping the bear remained focused on the candy.
Luckily, Warnke’s retreat coincided with the bear’s discovery of the candy bucket. The bear seemed to prefer chocolate over human contact. Meanwhile, the hospital intercom issued a warning about the bear, but that didn’t stop some curious staff members from capturing photos.
Warnke eventually escaped unharmed, and the bear exited through the entrance it had used. No injuries occurred during the visit.
Hospital staff later showed Warnke a surveillance photo of the bear standing at the emergency reception desk. The scene seemed almost as if the bear was checking in.
With winter approaching, bears are usually preparing for hibernation by piling on the pounds. Bears typically feast on salmon, forage through dumpsters, and search for berries. This bear, however, found a sweet alternative at the hospital.
Perhaps next time the bear should consider wearing a costume.
