President Trump Credits Walmart for Price Cuts Amid Inflation

President Donald Trump recently claimed credit for Walmart’s decision to reduce prices, despite the retailer not acknowledging any government involvement. Amid criticism over rising inflation during his tenure, Trump attempted to portray Democrats as responsible for ongoing price increases. The president also criticized a bipartisan effort to lower housing costs, describing it as insignificant.

As the November midterm elections approach, Trump has attempted to paint Democrats as proponents of government intervention in private business. In a social media post, he indicated that Walmart had reduced prices at his administration’s urging. According to Trump, Walmart agreed to lower prices, including a nearly 15% reduction for a pound of ground beef, to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday.

Walmart’s recent price cuts, unveiled after Trump’s post, aim to assist customers during the summer. However, Walmart’s statement did not mention any coordination with the White House. The release highlighted reductions in prices for items like ground beef, corn, red cherries, ice cream, chips, and soda, without addressing Trump’s claims directly.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a rise in consumer prices of 4.2% over a year, a significant increase from the 3% rate when Trump took office. Some relief might come from lower oil prices due to the interim ceasefire with Iran, allowing more tankers through the Strait of Hormuz.

Previously, Trump had publicly criticized Walmart over prices, urging the company to absorb the costs of tariffs he imposed. In May 2025, he challenged Walmart to ‘eat’ tariff costs instead of passing them onto customers, asserting that the company and China should not blame tariffs for price hikes.
