I began my journey at the Del Valle Independent School District’s Disciplinary Alternative Education Program well before my start date. Officially, my first day as director was set for July 22, 2015. However, recognizing the need for early preparation, I stepped onto campus weeks early. Waiting until the designated date seemed impractical if we wanted to ensure readiness for the school year.
Understanding the importance of a strong start, I brought a small portable speaker and a microphone to lift the spirits of our community. I chose to play ‘Lean on Me’ to foster a sense of unity and support among the staff and students. This proactive step aimed to create an environment where everyone felt welcomed and motivated from day one.
The Hechinger Report, known for its focus on educational inequality and innovation, emphasizes how education can be improved. This aligns with my approach, highlighting the critical nature of preparation and the impact of nurturing educational spaces. Through these efforts, we aimed to demonstrate why education is so vital and how it can transform lives.
