DNA Evidence in Charlie Kirk’s Assassination Case

In Provo, Utah, investigators have found crucial evidence in the case of Charlie Kirk’s assassination. A towel and screwdriver, believed to have DNA from Tyler Robinson, the suspect, were recovered. The DNA of Robinson’s former lover and roommate, Lance Twiggs, was also found on these items.

Robinson, 23, stands accused of fatally shooting 31-year-old Kirk at a Turning Point USA event on September 10, 2025. The towel was allegedly used to hide the suspected murder weapon near Utah Valley University. A screwdriver was discovered near a possible sniper’s vantage point at the event, though its purpose remains unclear.

Both Robinson and Twiggs provided samples for DNA profiling. The preliminary hearing for Robinson started on Monday. Prosecutors need to prove probable cause for charges including aggravated murder, which could lead to the death penalty.

During the hearing, David Hull from the Utah Department of Public Safety highlighted surveillance footage showing Robinson on campus before and after the shooting. Another witness, Sgt. Jennifer Faumuina of the State Bureau of Investigations, discussed her team’s recovery of the alleged murder weapon and the screwdriver at the scene. The Mauser 98 bolt-action rifle used in the shooting was wrapped in a towel and suited to the bullet caliber found during Kirk’s autopsy.

Robinson is alleged to have confessed to Twiggs in writing and via message. Twiggs, cooperating with investigators, has not been charged. His DNA on key evidence is seen as strengthening the case against Robinson.

Later in the hearing, FBI forensic analyst Amanda Bakker testified about DNA analysis. Robinson is thought to be the major DNA contributor on critical evidence items. Prosecutor Ryan McBride and defense attorney Michael Burt sparred over the extent of questioning, with Burt pressing on DNA findings.

The court ended the day’s session with gallery observers, including Kirk’s widow Erika, watching intently. Robinson’s defense sought to challenge assertions about DNA evidence, while family members of both Kirk and Robinson attended.

Robinson has yet to enter a plea. Should prosecutors prove probable cause, a trial is expected. Legal experts predict prosecutors will likely meet this requirement.
