Jayson Tatum on the NBA’s ‘Abrupt Endings’
Jayson Tatum shared his views on the Boston Celtics’ trade of Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers. This unexpected move involved exchanging Brown for Paul George and several future draft picks, marking a significant shift in Tatum’s career. He called the transition “tough,” acknowledging the challenges within professional basketball.
During an event in Massachusetts promoting his children’s book, “Baby Dunks-a-Lot,” Tatum spoke with Howard Bryant about the impact of the trade. He described the difficulty of the situation, saying it’s “weird” to adapt to a new team dynamic after nine years with a teammate like Brown.
“To be honest, it’s weird. You know, you play on a team with a guy for nine years…and then one day, you find out that they’re no longer on your team anymore.”
An integral part of their joint success, Brown joined the Celtics in 2016-17, followed by Tatum the next season. Despite winning a title in 2024 and appearing to build a dynasty, their paths have diverged. Tatum emphasized the value of appreciating past achievements and welcoming new teammates.
Impact of the Trade
The trade surprised many, given Brown’s significant contribution to the Celtics’ achievements. He helped the team secure the second-best record in the Eastern Conference last season. Tatum had limited play due to injury recovery, but returned for part of the playoffs. Ironically, he missed the pivotal Game 7 against the 76ers, where Brown and the Celtics suffered defeat.
Behind-the-Scenes Insights
According to Shams Charania, Tatum and Brown’s relationship off the court was almost non-existent in recent times. Celtics general manager Brad Stevens explained that Tatum wasn’t consulted in the trade decision.
“I know how little I sleep. I don’t think anybody else needs to feel that,” Stevens commented on the decision-making process.
Looking Forward
Despite the shock of the trade, Tatum remains focused on moving forward. He praised Brown’s contributions and expressed a desire to embrace new team dynamics. As they transition to different phases in their careers, Tatum’s remarks highlight the ever-changing nature of the NBA.
