Tuberville, representing Alabama, mentioned on Monday that a staff member was present with Graham’s scheduler on Saturday night. Graham had called, expressing concerns over chest pains and seeking assistance.
Lindsey called, basically said, ‘Listen, I’m having chest pains. You know, I need to do something,Tuberville recounted. Graham’s scheduler asked if he had contacted emergency services, to which Tuberville relayed that Graham had responded,No, that’s the reason I called you.
Reports, including from dispatch audio on Broadcastify, indicated that emergency services were deployed to Graham’s location in Washington, D.C., around 8:30 p.m. ET on Saturday due to a report of chest pains.
Cause of Death and Political Impact
Graham’s office described his cause of death as resulting from a brief and sudden illness. Preliminary examinations showed he died of an aortic dissection caused by arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. At the time, Graham was actively engaged in a reelection campaign, in which he was anticipated to succeed.
A week before his passing, Graham had returned from a trip to Ukraine. Former President Donald Trump shared that he spoke with Graham about the SAVE America Act shortly before his death. Senator Tuberville commented, Lindsey basically worked himself to death.
He noted Graham’s commitment to his work and remarked on the senator’s lack of a traditional family life, highlighting Graham’s constant travels for national duties.
Speculation and Calls for Investigation
Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri did not dismiss the potential for foul play in Graham’s death. In a Fox News appearance, Hawley emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, including full toxicology and autopsy, citing Graham’s strong stances against influential global figures. Nobody had been a greater advocate of taking on Putin than Lindsey Graham,
he noted.
Hawley clarified he was not promoting conspiracy theories but stressed the importance of clarity for Graham’s constituents and the American nation.
Appointment of Darline Graham Nordone
South Carolina’s Governor Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham Nordone, Graham’s sister, as the interim U.S. senator for the state. This decision followed public encouragement from Trump, labeling the choice as a respectful homage to Senator Graham.
Nordone, though never elected to office, was a trusted confidante of her brother. Post their parents’ death during her adolescence, Graham became her legal guardian.
Upcoming Special Election
South Carolina faces an upcoming special election in November to elect a senator to complete Graham’s term. A competitive Republican primary is expected, with candidates like Representatives Russell Fry, Nancy Mace, and Ralph Norman anticipated to participate. On the Democratic side, Annie Andrews is projected to contest in the general election.
