Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the U.S. Mint will produce a new gold $1 coin featuring President Trump. This initiative is part of the celebration of America’s 250 years of independence. Alongside this, efforts are underway to incorporate Trump’s legacy into American currency with his signature on new notes and a proposed $250 bill bearing his image.
In a social media statement, Bessent described the new coin as a tribute to liberty and patriotism. However, the decision to include Trump’s image has sparked controversy. An 1866 law suggests that US currency should only depict deceased individuals to prevent perceptions of monarchy.
The Treasury Department defends the decision, citing the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, which grants the authority to issue coins for significant national milestones. Bessent emphasizes that these commemorative coins reflect Trump’s vision for America.
Changes to American currency often attract debate, as they signify national identity and values.
