The United States ramped up attacks on Iran early Thursday, striking targets further north and engaging a ship accused of breaching a naval blockade on Iran. Iran responded with missile and drone strikes on U.S. allies, warning of escalation. Recent U.S.-Iran exchanges have disrupted the interim peace agreement, risking wider conflict. Iranian officials reported over 35 casualties and more than 300 injuries due to U.S. strikes, including in areas near Tehran.
Since the U.S. and Israel launched the war on Iran on February 28, Tehran closed the Strait of Hormuz, affecting global prices of oil and other goods. Col. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, representing Iran’s military, warned of potential attacks on regional infrastructure should U.S. threats materialize. The strait remains a critical line for Iran.
U.S. strikes targeted areas around Tehran, and also hit Semnan province, a hub for Iran’s missile production and space programs. Other strikes included provinces like Hamedan, Hormozgan, and Sistan and Baluchestan. An assault on Greater Tunb Island in the Strait of Hormuz aimed at Iranian defense positions. The U.S. disabled an oil tanker, Belma, near Kharg Island after ignored warnings, underscoring increasing rivalries.
On Wednesday, the U.S. targeted a barracks of Iran’s 388th Mechanized Infantry Brigade in Sistan and Baluchestan, launching 13 missiles and causing deaths and injuries. Iran retaliated on Thursday with attacks on Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait. No immediate reports of damages or casualties emerged from these incidents.
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi condemned an attack on Irbil during his U.S. visit, highlighting efforts to disarm militia groups. Meanwhile, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz intensified. The U.S. aims to control the strait, crucial for global shipping, but faces challenges in doing so. Oil prices have surged, impacting U.S. economic interests as elections approach.
Despite mediation efforts, tensions remain. President Donald Trump expressed hope for a peace deal with Iran, indicating willingness to negotiate or escalate. Additionally, Trump announced the release of an American citizen from Iran, identified by lawyer Jared Genser as Dena Karari, arrested on espionage charges.
