Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Renovation Issues

A recent $14 million renovation of the Lincoln Memorial’s Reflecting Pool has sparked controversy. The peeling of the pool’s lining in numerous spots aligns with stages of its renovation, not vandalism, according to a Washington Post analysis.

Trump’s Vandalism Claims

President Donald Trump attributes the damage to vandals. He claimed the lining was cut and forcibly ripped by individuals. A post on his Truth Social platform and statements by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum echoed these claims.

Despite this, photos on social media showed the pool being emptied for repairs within weeks of completion.

Analysis of Peeling Issues

The Washington Post identified at least seven locations where the pool’s lining peeled away. Experts in waterproofing stated the pattern suggests application errors at the seams, rather than vandalism. They argue these seams needed special attention during installation.

“Seams are prone to failure without proper preparation,” said Vito Mariano, president of Basecrete Technologies.

The report noted that the peeling aligned with areas where different sections were painted at various times.

Experts Point to Installation Flaws

Experts believe that improper adhesion during installation might have caused the lining to separate. Several experts suggested overlapping of dried material without adequate preparation led to failures.

“Without a prepared and roughened surface, new coatings do not bond well,” explained Michael Bushnell, a retired U.S. Navy coating inspector.

Official Responses and Disputes

The White House and Interior Department disputed claims of poor application. They reiterated that the pool suffered vandalism, damaging over 300 feet of its siding.

An Interior spokesperson highlighted the project’s successful completion and consultations with expert agencies.

Renovation Process Details

The pool was painted using two coatings from Rhino Linings: a light blue epoxy base and a dark blue polyurea top layer. This process aimed for a waterproof barrier.

However, reports indicated multiple instances where the dark blue layer failed to adhere properly due to misalignment in application timing.

Experts’ Recommendations

Vito Mariano suggested maintaining continuous application to prevent seamless issues. Derek Downey recommended using tile and grout as barriers to ensure coating adhesion.

Without evidence of specialized attention at seams, doubts remain about the approach contractors took during the renovation.

Atlantic Industrial Coatings committed to making necessary repairs while denying any intrinsic failure in the project.

Past and Future Concerns

The Reflecting Pool has long battled with maintenance challenges, notably leakage and algae. Earlier renovations addressed some of these issues with significant investment.

Despite repair claims by officials, concerns persist over potential future issues given the magnitude of recent failures.

Extensive assessment and transparent evidence are needed to rectify any ongoing issues with the pool’s lining.
