The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) plans to inspect farms and a lettuce shredding facility connected to a cyclospora outbreak. This investigation follows reports that shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms, supplied to Taco Bell, was contaminated.
The FDA’s focus is on identifying how lettuce became contaminated and where it was distributed. Taylor Farms, a major produce company, has come under scrutiny following illness among customers.
Extent of the Contamination
More than 1,644 individuals who dined at Taco Bell reported illness. Among them, 94 needed hospitalization, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Cyclospora infection can cause severe symptoms like explosive diarrhea, cramps, and bleeding.
A key concern is whether contaminated lettuce was distributed to other retailers across the U.S. FDA investigators are set to visit Mexican farms and the shredding facility involved.
Steps Taken by Taylor Farms
Taylor Farms has engaged with a former Trump White House official as the investigation progresses. Company executives urged the White House to refrain from associating the outbreak with Taylor Farms. Efforts are underway to address the situation and manage public perception.
The investigation underscores the need for stringent safety measures in food production. Consumers and other retailers are advised to remain cautious until more information becomes available.
