Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, took over as UK’s prime minister on Monday. He became leader of the Labour Party after winning a special parliamentary election. In his recent speech, Burnham emphasized a pro-business approach, promising significant political change.
He inherits economic challenges, including a sluggish economy and a cost-of-living crisis. Burnham’s ‘Manchesterism’ aims to stimulate economic growth through business-friendly socialism, focusing on investment in transport, housing, and infrastructure.
Burnham has promised greater autonomy for local leaders and plans to increase industrial jobs and educational opportunities. He also seeks more public control over privatized utilities.
According to Sheri Berman, a political science professor at Barnard College, Burnham’s platform aligns with European social democracy. His agenda embraces public service expansion, housing, and strong public utilities.
