New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has stirred significant controversy with his call to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his upcoming visit to the UN General Assembly. Mamdani, citing allegations of war crimes against Netanyahu, has drawn sharp criticism from the Israeli Prime Minister’s office.
Mamdani’s recent remarks have added fuel to the fire. In a resurfaced 2023 podcast clip, the mayor described Israel as “an idea,” which has attracted fresh scrutiny. “For many, Israel is not a place or country but an idea,” Mamdani stated on the “Here & Everywhere: The Solidarity Roundtables” podcast. His criticism extends to American politicians’ support for Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Critics say these comments reflect a pattern of Mamdani’s criticism of Israel, which risks alienating the Jewish community. His administration is exploring whether New York City has the authority to arrest Netanyahu if he attends the UN General Assembly.
Zohran Mamdani, a Ugandan-born Muslim, became mayor after winning the Democratic Party’s primary. The Foundation for the Defense of Democracies research fellow Hussain Abdul-Hussain noted, “He lives in a bubble, disconnected from reality.” Such views have further polarized public opinion.
Anti-Israel sentiment surfaced in part from figures like Hasan Piker, who delivered a far-left speech at a college Democrats convention, echoing Mamdani’s views. Conservative commentators, including Stephen Miller, have criticized the narrative describing Israel as merely an idea.
A pro-Israel education group, Boundless, described Israel as both an idea and a reality, emphasizing its significance for nearly 10 million residents. The debate continues as Mamdani insists the New York City Law Department is evaluating the legal possibility of arresting Netanyahu during his visit.
According to Mamdani, Netanyahu is a “war criminal” who should face charges at The Hague. The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu in November 2024, accusing him of war crimes related to Gaza. As September’s United Nations General Assembly approaches, the situation remains tense.
