On Thursday, China’s military initiated a series of live-fire drills in the Taiwan Strait over the span of two days. This action comes shortly after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio cautioned against any disturbances to the trade routes in this critical maritime area.
The announcement of these exercises came from China’s maritime safety agency, highlighting the areas near Dongshan Island, situated in Fujian province. This decision followed a meeting between Rubio and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Manila.
During his visit to the Philippines for a regional summit, Rubio addressed the press, discussing the topic of Taiwan with Wang. Taiwan, a self-governing democracy, is claimed by China as part of its territory, a claim rejected by Taipei.
Rubio criticized the Chinese military activities surrounding Taiwan. As a major trade ally and a supplier of essential microchips to the U.S., Taiwan’s security is crucial. Rubio stressed that these maneuvers contradict the efforts towards strategic stability established by President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping during their Beijing summit in May.
China, asserting jurisdiction over Taiwan including the nearby waters, frequently deploys warships and enforcement vessels to emphasize its control.
On Thursday, Rubio expressed his stance on X, stating, “No nation has the right to restrict the free flow of commerce and travel through international waterways, including in the Taiwan Strait.”
