For the first time, a Chinese woman has been awarded the Fields Medal, the most prestigious mathematics prize. This achievement raises the total number of Chinese-born Fields Medal recipients to three, as two mathematicians from China won medals this year. Often likened to the Nobel Prize in mathematics, Fields Medals are given every four years to between two and four mathematicians under 40, recognizing both achievement and potential. This marks only the third time in its 90-year history that a woman has received this award. The recipients were honored at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia. The event featured Chinese mathematicians Hong Wang and Yu Deng, American John Pardon, and Canadian Jacob Tsimerman.
Ulrike Tillmann, vice-president and incoming president of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), the organization behind the awards, acknowledged the significance of another woman winning the medal. She emphasized the importance of recognizing contributions from women at the highest levels, including the Fields Medal.
Hong Wang and Yu Deng made history as the first Chinese scholars to simultaneously win the award. Originally from China’s Guilin City, Wang is the first Chinese woman recipient. She recalls her joy in solving her first math problem as a child and now works at NYU and France’s Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques. Wang gained recognition for addressing the Kakeya conjecture in three dimensions, along with the University of British Columbia’s Joshua Zahl. The IMU highlighted that solving this problem has opened avenues for theorems and conjectures in various mathematical fields, including harmonic analysis and partial differential equations.
Yu Deng, originally from Shenzhen, China, made strides in establishing mathematical rules for explaining branches of physics. His joint work with other researchers represents significant progress in deriving the laws of physics from first principles.
American mathematician John Pardon was acknowledged for his contributions to topology and geometry, while Jacob Tsimerman of Canada was recognized for his efforts in expanding algebraic geometry frameworks.
The announcement of this year’s winners was revealed early due to a vulnerability on the International Congress of Mathematicians website. In China, the news was met with enthusiasm on social media. Users celebrated the achievement, noting the honor brought to the country. However, some questioned why many Chinese scholars leave for the U.S. after their undergraduate studies.
The awards coincide with efforts in China to attract foreign talent, such as the introduction of a “K-visa” and the QiMing project aimed at recruiting STEM talent. Despite the ‘brain drain’ concerns, the awards underscore a significant academic success for China on the global stage.
In addition to the Fields Medal, the IMU announced other major honors, including the Chern Medal awarded to Graeme Segal of Oxford University and the Abacus Medal awarded to Shayan Oveis Gharan of the University of Washington. Fields Medalists receive international prestige, a gold medal depicting Archimedes, and a cash prize. However, for Deng, the main motivation remains a deep curiosity and the joy of problem-solving.
