Jen Psaki Discusses Challenges for Democrats in Media Landscape

MS NOW host Jen Psaki expressed concern on Wednesday about the Democratic Party’s struggle to make a significant impact in the current media environment. She pondered whether her show contributes to the issue, given that former President Donald Trump frequently dominates the news cycle. Psaki’s discussion with Terry Moran, a former ABC News journalist, revealed Democrats’ lack of expected political advantage ahead of the November midterm elections, despite Trump’s low approval ratings.

Psaki noted there is strong enthusiasm among Democrats. However, the party struggles to present itself as offering more than just opposition to Trump. She commented on the time it has taken Democratic leaders to transition from focusing solely on anti-Trump rhetoric to providing a broader message. Psaki stated, “It has taken some time for a lot of the leading Democratic voices to move from just anti-Trump to more than anti-Trump. To ‘We’re not for Trump, but here’s what we’re offering.’”

John Fetterman criticized Democrats for running campaigns based primarily on negative Trump sentiment rather than constructive messaging. Psaki acknowledged the difficulty in overcoming Trump’s news dominance, questioning if media professionals like herself contribute to the problem.

“I would also say, to take a little bit of the blame off of leading Democrats, it’s very hard to break through with that stuff,” Psaki added, highlighting the challenges faced by Democratic leaders in communicating their plans.

Psaki elaborated on the obstacles Democrats encounter in sharing their initiatives, such as improving health care for young children or providing additional support for pre-K education. She mentioned her platform and wondered if neglecting non-Trump topics in her show is a mistake.

“I don’t think the public knows enough about the Democrats’ plans for making their lives better,” Psaki remarked, indicating a lack of awareness about Democratic proposals and values.

In a previous discussion in April, Psaki commented on the debate surrounding the 25th Amendment against Trump. She expressed confusion regarding why some left-wing individuals focus extensively on this topic, suggesting it isn’t productive. Psaki stated, “I have no issue with people saying they’re for invoking the 25th Amendment, but it’s not going to happen. So, it’s like why are we spending so much time, you know?”

Moran agreed with Psaki on the challenges faced by journalists in deciding which aspects of Trump-related news to cover. He emphasized the difficulty of balancing coverage between Trump’s direct actions and the broader activities within his administration. He posed the question: “Do you cover the Trump show, or do you cover the Trump administration and what people should know about it?”
