Former South Carolina Congressman and ex-Governor Mark Sanford announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate on Thursday. Sanford, a GOP critic of President Donald Trump, is entering a crowded field vying for the seat of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham.
In a launch video, Sanford stated, “We’re at a tipping point, and that’s why I’ve decided to run for the U.S. Senate. I’d ask that you look at my record in Congress and as governor in watching out for your family’s future.”
Current Senator Darline Graham, appointed to fill her late brother’s term, confirmed her candidacy for a full term on Fox News’ “Hannity.” Her announcement followed a meeting with President Trump at the White House, where he offered his full endorsement.
Despite Trump’s backing of Graham, several notable South Carolina Republicans are challenging her. Representative Ralph Norman announced his candidacy after recently running for the GOP gubernatorial nomination. Additionally, Rep. Russell Fry and businessman Mark Lynch have declared their intentions to run.
The special Republican Senate primary is scheduled for August 11. If no candidate wins over 50%, a runoff will occur on August 25.
Graham shared her thoughts with Sean Hannity on her Senate bid. “I want to carry on Lindsey Graham’s legacy and support Trump’s agenda,” she stated.
Mark Sanford, known for his fiscal conservatism, emphasizes the nation’s growing debt as a primary concern for his Senate campaign. “Our country is at a financial tipping point,” Sanford expressed. “I’m worried for our children because for the first time, America is borrowing from the future faster than we’re building it.”
Conversely, Fry and Norman stress their allegiance to Trump. Fry declared in a social media post, “South Carolina needs President Trump’s strongest ally in the Senate. Make no mistake: I will be President Trump’s favorite U.S. Senator.” Fry highlighted his “MAGA warrior” credentials through images with Trump.
Norman reiterated his commitment to Trump’s priorities, including the “SAVE America Act.” Significant endorsements for Norman include support from Republican Sens. Mike Lee and Rick Scott, Turning Point USA, and Rep. Nancy Mace.
Darline Graham, despite lacking elected experience, has the advantage of Trump’s endorsement and widespread recognition. Republican strategist Ryan Williams remarked, “The Trump endorsement is a major boost, but it doesn’t guarantee success.” However, he noted that aspiring candidates should seize this rare opportunity.
Sanford, unlike Fry and Norman, did not mention Trump in his campaign launch, signaling a different approach. The GOP primary winner is expected to be a strong contender against Democratic nominee Annie Andrews in the general election.
