WNBA’s Handling of Caitlin Clark

Sage Steele, the host of ‘The Sage Steele Show’, has criticized the WNBA for its handling of Caitlin Clark, a generational talent. Steele’s critique focuses on the league’s poor officiating, which has resulted in many uncalled fouls against Clark and other players. She warns that continued neglect in addressing these issues risks alienating the WNBA’s growing fanbase.

Controversy Surrounding Caitlin Clark

The controversy escalated when Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy criticized USA Today columnist Nancy Armour’s argument. Armour claimed that Clark’s reactions to officiating fuel racist abuse and pose a danger to Black and queer WNBA players. Armour suggested that some of Clark’s supporters view her disputes as a White woman needing protection, leading to targeted abuse against other players.

Reactions from Media and Commentators

Portnoy condemned Armour’s claims, labeling them the “dumbest” paragraph in sports history. He argued that the idea of Clark’s disputes with referees being dangerous for civil rights was absurd. Portnoy called for Armour to be fired for her outlandish statements.

Armour’s column drew further criticism for invoking the history of violence against Black Americans, particularly referencing Emmett Till’s lynching. Sports analyst Sam Vecenie questioned how such a passage was published, while OutKick founder Clay Travis called Armour’s column insane.

Responses to Armour’s Comments

Armour acknowledged that her comparison to Emmett Till was “inartful” and lacked context, but maintained that threats against Black players remain a concern. She emphasized the history of perceived threats to White women being weaponized against African-Americans.

In response, USA Today updated Armour’s column for clarity and stated they would not comment further. Armour posted a statement reiterating her point about the danger posed to Black players in the league.

League’s Actions and Clark’s Stand

The WNBA and its players’ union announced plans to enhance security resources due to racist, hateful, and abusive messages directed at players. Caitlin Clark condemned abuse against players, coaches, and officials, stating that harassment and hate are unacceptable.

As the WNBA navigates these controversies, the league must address officiating issues to maintain its fanbase and ensure player safety.
