The state of Louisiana has set an ambitious goal: by 2030, 60% of working-age adults should hold a degree or a high-value credential. Achieving this target requires significant investment and policy adjustments, especially in the realm of higher education.
Currently, both Louisiana and the United States face a growing affordability crisis in higher education. Federal financial aid is being cut back, creating challenges for students who rely on this support to pursue their studies. In particular, Grad PLUS loans, which previously helped cover costs for graduate students, have been eliminated. This has significantly impacted students pursuing high-need professions like nursing and social work.
Moreover, stricter borrowing caps for graduate students are reducing the funds available for education in these critical fields. Subsidized federal student loans, which help students save thousands in interest over the life of the loan, are also threatened. The House’s proposed funding bill for the next fiscal year includes measures that could further limit access to affordable education.
These changes underscore the importance of addressing the financial barriers to obtaining higher education degrees in Louisiana and beyond. Policymakers must consider how such reductions in aid will impact the ability of individuals to advance their education and contribute to the state’s workforce needs.
