Actor Christopher Atkins, well-known for his role in The Blue Lagoon, recently opened up about a missed opportunity early in his career. He spoke candidly at Fanboy Expo Knoxville in Tennessee, discussing how his drinking habits cost him the lead role in the 1984 film, Footloose.
Atkins, now 65, explained to People magazine that the filmmakers were interested in casting him for the movie. However, his alcohol consumption prevented him from being able to meet with them effectively. He admitted, “I was partying way too much and they called me in.” Despite having the part essentially secured, Atkins’ state at the meeting led the filmmakers to pass on him, offering the role instead to Kevin Bacon.
The missed opportunity marked a significant moment in Atkins’ life. He noted, “I’m almost 40 years sober now.” Reflecting on his breakout film, he shared that he was just 18 when he starred opposite Brooke Shields in The Blue Lagoon. Prior to this role, he had little interest in acting, dreaming instead of a baseball career.
Atkins discussed how his life transformed following the movie’s success, stating, “We were young, and you’re constantly getting this notoriety.” The film, controversial for its depiction of teenage characters in a sexual relationship, faced criticism despite the use of body doubles for certain scenes.
He also recounted his initial days on the film set in Fiji, noting how unfamiliar he was with acting terminology and practices. The shoot’s isolated environment contributed to a natural way of working, according to Atkins, “By the time I was done…it was really hard for me to keep my clothes on at a beach.”
The Blue Lagoon was both criticized and celebrated, receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography. Despite criticisms, Atkins felt no regrets about his Hollywood career. He expressed satisfaction with his life’s path, including his decision to focus on family, saying, “I married young. I wanted to be a dad more than chase the business.”
Atkins reminisces fondly on his over 100 film and television roles. He is currently looking forward to creating his own movie, marking it as the last professional milestone he seeks to achieve. “I’ve been blessed,” he remarked.
