Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed recent tensions surrounding his planned attendance at the United Nations General Assembly. His statement follows calls from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for his arrest based on an International Criminal Court warrant.
Accusations of Hate Speech
Netanyahu accused Mayor Mamdani of inciting division among New Yorkers. He cited Mamdani’s anti-Israel rhetoric as a source of fear for the city’s Jewish community. Netanyahu remarked, ‘Look what he’s doing. He’s supposed to be the mayor of all New Yorkers… but he’s trying to turn one group against the other.’
Several Jewish American residents in New York have conveyed increasing concerns for their safety in the current climate.
Stabbing Incident and its Context
The Prime Minister linked Mamdani’s statements to a recent stabbing incident outside a Manhattan synagogue. Raul Morales, 51, allegedly attacked a Jewish man with a screwdriver, simultaneously shouting “Allahu Akbar.” Authorities claim Morales used the same phrase in another separate assault involving an Asian man.
Mamdani previously recognized the city’s lack of legal authority to execute the ICC’s warrant against Netanyahu. However, he urged federal authorities to take action, labeling Netanyahu as a ‘war criminal.’
Netanyahu’s Upcoming Visit
Despite the controversies, Netanyahu remains committed to attending the upcoming United Nations General Assembly scheduled in September. He emphasized his intent to ‘speak the truth’ and strengthen Israel-U.S. relations during his visit.
Netanyahu dismissed concerns about Mamdani’s statements, asserting, ‘I’m not concerned.’ In his ongoing prime ministership, he frequently participates in the annual assembly, barring any security threats. He anticipates no such issues this time.
Mayor Mamdani’s office has not issued a response to these developments. Meanwhile, Netanyahu plans to continue his diplomatic efforts and engagements in New York.
