Former Food and Drug Administration (FDA) food safety chief, Susan Mayne, has highlighted the risk of contamination spreading through prepackaged leafy greens. Mayne, now a professor of epidemiology at Yale School of Public Health, made this announcement on CBS News.
Ongoing Investigation into Cyclospora
The cyclospora outbreak has prompted a significant investigation into its sources. The illness, caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, leads to severe gastrointestinal symptoms such as watery diarrhea, cramping, and fatigue. Current investigations seek to identify specific sources of contamination.
As federal investigators trace the outbreak, public health experts suggest exercising caution with high-risk foods like leafy greens and fresh produce. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports a significant number of infections this year.
Through May, the CDC has logged 4,173 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis, alongside numerous unconfirmed reports.
Taylor Farms and Safety Measures
Taylor Farms, a company linked to previous outbreaks, has removed potentially contaminated products as a precaution. No positive tests for Cyclospora have been found in their products as of July 2026. The company reported spending substantial funds annually to uphold safety.
In response to concerns about the outbreak source, Taylor Farms issued a broader recall. They also halted production from their central Mexico facility to reassess safety measures and ensure consumer protection.
FDA Investigation
The FDA’s investigation continues into potential sources, including lettuce, parsley, and cilantro. These items are under scrutiny to pinpoint the outbreak’s origins.

Despite safety measures, Mayne emphasized avoiding bagged salads due to high contamination risks. Contamination can spread more easily in prepackaged salads, amplifying the outbreak.

Cyclospora is a parasite causing cyclosporiasis, primarily spread through food and water contaminated with fecal matter. Improper hygiene can facilitate contamination, risking an outbreak.
Symptoms include severe diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fatigue, potentially lasting weeks if untreated. While not directly contagious, the parasite’s lifecycle complicates tracing and containing outbreaks.
Treatment for cyclospora typically involves the antibiotic trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole or Bactrim. Complete recovery is possible, though care is crucial to avoid dehydration or prolonged illness, especially for vulnerable individuals.
