The Philadelphia 76ers announced on Monday a significant addition to their roster: LeBron James. They made this news public with a photo of James’ iconic blue No. 23 jersey hanging in a locker adorned with a crown, a nod to his ‘King’ nickname.
The team’s agreement with James is a two-year contract valued at $8 million total, aligning with the veteran’s minimum salary. This decision marks the continuation of James’ illustrious career, one in which he has already achieved four NBA MVP titles.
Mike Gansey, 76ers team president, expressed immense confidence in James’ ability to take the team to new heights. Gansey stated, “LeBron is undeniably one of basketball’s greatest players, and the impact he brings cannot be overstated.”
James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, previously hinted at retirement but ultimately chose to pursue another challenge with the 76ers. On social media, he shared his excitement, calling this move his ‘last decision’ and emphasizing his commitment to turning the 76ers into a championship-winning team. “I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team,” James said, expressing his eagerness to energize the fans and start this new chapter.
Throughout the weekend, James engaged with his followers by posting workout videos on Instagram, captioning them with, “It’s that time again. 4:12 AM. Let’s get it.” This reinforces his dedication to maintaining peak performance as he prepares for the upcoming season.
James, a four-time NBA champion, initially declared that his final season with the Los Angeles Lakers was over. However, he elected to join Philadelphia, a franchise with standout players like Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Jaylen Brown. Despite this talent, the team has not won an NBA championship since 1983 or progressed past the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs since 2001.
Approaching his 42nd birthday in December, James appears ready to tackle the challenge of leading the 76ers to victory, much like his impressive achievement of leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a championship in 2016, ending their 56-year drought.
“I cannot wait to see LeBron alongside Jaylen Brown, VJ Edgecombe, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and our talented roster as we work to deliver a championship for Philly,” said Josh Harris, team owner.
Last season, the 76ers ended with a 45-37 record, eventually getting swept in the second round by the New York Knicks, who became the NBA champions. James’ track record speaks for itself: he is a 22-time All-Star, a 21-time All-NBA selection, a four-time MVP, a four-time NBA Finals MVP, a three-time All-Star Game MVP, and part of the NBA’s 75th anniversary team. Last season, his stats included averages of 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game. Over his career of more than 1,600 games, he has averaged 26.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.4 assists.
James began his NBA career in Cleveland in 2003, spending seven seasons there before joining Miami for four seasons, where he secured his first two NBA titles. He later returned to Cleveland, winning another championship in 2016, before joining the Lakers in 2018 and winning again in 2020. James is the only player to earn NBA Finals MVP with three different franchises.
This move to the 76ers also brings a reunion with Gansey, hired in May after the team parted ways with Daryl Morey. Gansey and James share history as long-time Ohio basketball stars, with Gansey earning second place behind James for Ohio’s Mr. Basketball award in 2001. “Knowing LeBron since high school, I’ve seen how he elevates any team he’s part of,” said Gansey. “His professionalism, competitiveness, and commitment to community are second to none.”
James’ arrival at Philadelphia marks the start of another significant chapter in his basketball journey, with expectations high for what he will bring to the 76ers.
