The New York Knicks clinched their first NBA championship in 53 years last season by defeating the San Antonio Spurs in the Finals. As the 2026-27 NBA season begins, the Knicks encounter fresh challenges as the reigning champions.
Eastern Conference Rivalry
In the Eastern Conference, the Knicks face significant competition. NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins identifies the Philadelphia 76ers as the most formidable threat. The 76ers made notable moves in the offseason by signing NBA legend LeBron James and acquiring Jaylen Brown through a major trade with the Boston Celtics. These additions bolster an already strong lineup featuring Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe.
Perkins commented on an episode of NBA Today on ESPN, “The 76ers are the team to dethrone the Knicks.” Last season, without James and Brown, the 76ers advanced to the second round of the playoffs by defeating the Celtics in the first round but were swept by Jalen Brunson and the Knicks in the second round.
Season Opener and Expectations
The anticipation for the new season builds as the 76ers prepare to face the Knicks on opening day, October 20. This matchup not only marks the first game of the regular season but also tests the strengthened 76ers roster against the defending champions.
