President Donald Trump has highlighted “our new and beautiful Greenland” as he promoted a new initiative focused on oil, gas, and mineral exploration. This announcement came on the heels of a security accord reached in September with Greenland and Denmark.
The agreement permits the United States access to Greenland’s airspace and territory while Greenland continues to function as an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark. This follows previous remarks from Trump about the potential for forcibly annexing the island.
“There are experts that are saying that the amount of easily available oil is far greater than that of almost any land, anywhere in the world and, even more importantly, from a security purpose in the defense and offense of both the United States of America, and Europe, is second to none,” Trump stated on Truth Social on Wednesday.
Trump emphasized that Greenland’s strategic position would enhance the United States’ defense capabilities. He noted that any potential attack on the U.S. would need to cross over Greenland, where American defenses could intercept and neutralize threats, such as drones and missiles.
This story is still unfolding, with further details anticipated.
