On a warm July weekend, Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, California, saw crowds enjoying the weather when a dramatic water rescue unfolded. Lifeguards quickly responded to a distress call as towering 10-foot waves were generated by tropical cyclones in the eastern Pacific Ocean. According to a witness, Scott Vander Dussen, a 10-year-old boy was seen being carried away by the waves and rip currents.
The boy, who lost his footing and got overwhelmed by the ocean’s force, appeared as a ‘black dot’ amidst the white foam. Vander Dussen reported the situation to a nearby lifeguard tower, leading to a swift rescue operation. Recorded footage captured a lifeguard embracing the boy while battling the strong waves. Eventually, two lifeguards successfully brought the exhausted child back to shore.
Vander Dussen commended the lifeguards’ efforts, highlighting a rookie lifeguard’s ‘phenomenal’ contribution. The young lifeguard, aged between 16 and 17, played a crucial role. Although bystanders attempted to assist, the lifeguards’ expert training was indispensable for the rescue. The beachgoers erupted in applause as the boy was brought to safety. Thankfully, he did not suffer any severe injuries and was reunited with his parents.
The rescue gained national attention when a TikTok video caught the eye of President Trump and his son Eric Trump. They praised the lifeguard’s bravery, labeling it as ‘truly the best of America.’ President Trump even proposed a White House honor for the young lifeguard and the boy he saved.
The Santa Cruz District lifeguards from California State Parks reported 34 ocean rescues over that weekend. They also engaged in numerous preventative measures with beachgoers, decreasing the possibility of further incidents. State Parks officials emphasized that summertime south swells can create misleadingly calm appearances, leading to a false sense of security for beach visitors.

The National Weather Service issued a Beach Hazards Statement through Wednesday, warning about deadly ‘sneaker waves’ that can unexpectedly surge up the beach. Beachgoers are advised to seek professional help if they see anyone struggling in the water and to contact emergency services if needed.
