A man from the North Side has initiated legal action against the federal government due to an allegedly warrantless immigration raid on October 24. The incident targeted construction workers on his property during “Operation Midway Blitz.” Nearly nine months have passed since U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents arrived at Leo Feler’s Lakeview neighborhood. They pursued and detained a worker at his house, leaving tear gas behind.

Lawsuit Filed Against U.S. Government

Leo Feler, the homeowner, detailed the detention of the workers by federal agents at a news conference in downtown Chicago on October 31, 2025. The lawsuit, filed in the Northern District Court of Illinois, includes the U.S. government and the agents involved, citing trespassing and negligence. It primarily seeks compensation for property damage and claims Feler’s Fourth Amendment rights were violated. The lawsuit requests around $30,000 for damages to his property, including construction materials, an air conditioner, fences, a gate lock, and blood found in the house.

Impact on Feler’s Life

At the time of the raid, Feler was in Canada, witnessing the event unfold through his Ring doorbell. He claims personal and property safety concerns drive the lawsuit as much as the need for compensation. Feler described the incident’s impact on his life, mentioning canceled travel plans and delayed work on his house. He avoids hiring day laborers unless he is present and reported sleep disturbances requiring medication.

Attempts for Accountability

Feler spoke of attempts to file a police report about the property damages. Police supervisors allegedly dismissed an investigation. Feeling powerless after the raid, he expressed frustration over the lack of accountability and investigation into the federal agents’ actions.

A lawyer from a public-interest firm handling Feler’s case, Dylan Moore, noted the deliberate steps taken before resorting to litigation. The lack of thorough investigation led to the necessity of filing a federal lawsuit for accountability.
