The Detroit Lions were missing one of their key players as training camp began on Wednesday. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs did not participate in the team’s opening practice. As a 24-year-old, Gibbs is in a position to negotiate a contract extension.
Coach Dan Campbell commented on the situation, saying, You guys know how we feel about Gibbs and all of our guys.
He explained that the process is ongoing, with both parties working through the negotiation.
Despite not being on the field, Gibbs did report to camp and is not listed on the Lions’ Physically Unable to Perform or Non-Football Injury list. This suggests that his absence is related to contract discussions.
The Lions drafted Jahmyr Gibbs with the 12th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. He made an immediate impact, becoming a vital part of the team’s offense. In his rookie year, he rushed for 945 yards and scored 10 touchdowns, while also catching 52 passes for 316 yards and one touchdown in 15 games.
In 2024, Gibbs elevated his performance. He rushed for 1,412 yards and scored 16 touchdowns. Additionally, he caught 52 passes for 517 yards and four touchdowns. Last season, he played all 17 games, rushing for 1,223 yards, scoring 13 touchdowns, and catching 77 passes for 616 yards and five touchdowns.
Gibbs has earned Pro Bowl selections in each of his three professional seasons.
Similarly, Atlanta Falcons’ star running back Bijan Robinson was also absent from his team’s first day of training camp due to contract-related reasons.
