Discovery of Drug Tunnel in San Diego Leads to Massive Cocaine Bust

Authorities have identified a tunnel connecting Tijuana and San Diego as a likely passage for drug, weapon, and human trafficking across the U.S.-Mexico border. During an operation uncovering this tunnel, investigators seized around $45 million in drugs.

In a significant seizure, federal investigators found over 1,000 pounds of cocaine beneath the floorboards of a commercial truck entering the U.S. from Mexico. This bust is among the largest in Southern California this year, according to federal authorities.

The cocaine, worth over $20 million, was discovered within the floorboards of a truck and flatbed trailer at the Calexico Port of Entry, a key connection point between California and Mexico. The Department of Justice indicated that this seizure ranks as the year’s second-largest cocaine bust within the Southern District of California.

A separate operation in May revealed over a ton of cocaine linked to a cross-border tunnel, marking the largest seizure within the district this year.

Jose Manuel Lopez, 44, a Mexican citizen and the driver of the truck, was arrested and is charged with importing cocaine into the U.S. If convicted, Lopez faces a minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison, potentially extending to life imprisonment. Prosecutors emphasized the magnitude of this seizure as substantial even for the district’s standards.

The Sinaloa Cartel’s influence remains a critical aspect of such operations. Recently, ‘El Mayo,’ a cartel boss, received a life sentence and faces a $15 billion penalty for drug trafficking activities.

During the operation, authorities removed wooden floorboards from the trailer after detecting over 1,000 pounds of cocaine hidden beneath. Initially, the trailer carried 269 bundles of rebar before the detection of anomalies during an X-ray inspection. Following an alert from a narcotics detection dog, officers removed the rebar and found 366 packages of cocaine, collectively weighing over 1,000 pounds, equivalent to approximately 454 kilograms.

Lopez pleaded not guilty at his initial federal court appearance, and a detention hearing is set for August 3.
