After nearly five decades, a teenage girl found in a shallow grave beneath a California vineyard has been identified as Michelle Louise Collier. Her identity sheds new light on a long-cold murder mystery. Michelle, only 15, disappeared from Fresno in February 1978. Her remains were discovered four months later near Arvin by a tractor operator but remained unidentified for 48 years.
Cynthia Dunbar, Michelle’s older sister, expressed relief at finally learning her sister had been the victim. The news conference where this was announced was emotional, particularly for their 85-year-old mother, Maria. Dunbar addressed the unknown person responsible for her sister’s death, vowing that law enforcement will ensure justice.
Michelle’s remains were initially found on June 21, 1978, and an autopsy confirmed homicide. Despite efforts to identify her through fingerprints and dental records, the victim remained a ‘Jane Doe.’ This lack of identification stalled the investigation for decades.
Subsequent scientific advancements led to renewed attempts to solve the case. In 2007, efforts to capture DNA from the remains proved unsuccessful due to the lack of matching relatives. In 2008, forensic analysis estimated the victim’s age to be between 15 and 24, leaning towards the younger age.
The breakthrough came in 2025 through forensic investigative genetic genealogy. Partnering with Othram, investigators developed an advanced DNA profile, identifying potential relatives. A match with relatives confirmed Michelle Collier’s identity in October 2025.
This marks the 86th identification in California achieved with Othram’s genetic genealogy technology. Following this, Collier’s remains were released to her family in 2026 for a proper burial.
Dunbar expressed sorrow over her sister’s premature death. “You didn’t deserve to die this way, Shelley,” she said. The identification remains a significant development, yet the case continues as authorities aim to uncover the circumstances of her death.
No suspects have been publicly identified, but detectives emphasize that naming Michelle changes the investigation. Authorities continue to seek information from anyone who knew Michelle and can provide insights into her disappearance or death.
