In a remarkable turn of events, the LeBron James Philadelphia 76ers jersey is breaking records in the sports world. Fanatics reported a groundbreaking sales milestone, declaring it ‘the best-selling jersey ever for any player in the first 48 hours after their announcement,’ according to Adam Wells of Bleacher Report. The fact that it surpassed sales of Shohei Ohtani’s Los Angeles Dodgers jersey underscores its impact.
‘Philly Toughness’ Personified
Even before these jerseys became widely available, a Philadelphia area resident managed to flaunt his allegiance in an unconventional manner. Joey Abel, a fervent Sixers fan residing in New York, decided to imprint the jersey image on his skin.
Alex Coffey of the Philadelphia Inquirer covered Abel’s story, capturing his commitment to the team. While en route to the beach with his family, Abel learned of LeBron’s signing. He sought to display his excitement uniquely, opting to endure some discomfort, a hallmark of ‘Philly toughness.’
With a blue zinc sunscreen stick belonging to his nephews, Abel’s sister inscribed ‘James’ and ’23’ on his back, imitating a jersey design. Abel then chose not to apply sunscreen elsewhere on his body. ‘I don’t even know how I thought of it,’ Abel told Coffey. ‘I was just like, ‘How can I get a LeBron James jersey as fast as possible?’’
The sun didn’t take long to work its magic, as photos shared with the outlet revealed. About an hour later, family members wiped off the sunscreen, revealing a semi-permanent LeBron James jersey sunburn on Abel’s back.
The weather, slightly cloudy with temperatures in the high 70s, created optimal conditions for sunburn. Despite the embarrassment and pain his family expressed, Abel takes pride in his gesture. ‘It does hurt, but I did it, right?’ he said. ‘I’m going to have to keep it. I don’t really want it to fade as fast. Philly toughness, like LeBron’s going to learn.’
