Democrats are adopting a new tactic in deep-red states to improve their chances in the Senate. They are encouraging struggling Democratic candidates to withdraw, allowing independent candidates to directly face Republicans.
Nebraska’s Line-Up Shift
In Nebraska, Democratic nominee Cindy Burbank stepped down from the race against GOP Sen. Pete Ricketts. Her withdrawal gave a boost to independent candidate Dan Osborn. Previously, Osborn had narrowly lost to Sen. Deb Fischer, trailing by only seven points while Donald Trump carried the state by 21 points.
Idaho’s Independent Opportunity
In Idaho, Democrat David Roth exited the race, clearing the way for independent Todd Achilles to challenge Republican Sen. Jim Risch, who seeks a fourth term.
Montana’s Challenge
Democrats in Montana are encouraging Alani Bankhead to step aside for independent Seth Bodnar in the race against Republican Kurt Alme. State law requires that if Bankhead quits, Democrats must still present another candidate.
South Dakota’s Scenario
Similarly, in South Dakota, Democrats urge Julian Beaudion to exit, but she continues her campaign. The aim is to support independent Brian Bengs against GOP Sen. Mike Rounds.
Democrats believe this strategy could redistribute Republican focus and funds, even if independents don’t win.
Meanwhile: Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer attended a fundraiser for Mississippi Democratic Senate candidate Scott Colom.
Wisconsin’s Governor Race Developments
Former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes has withdrawn from Wisconsin’s Democratic governor primary. He acknowledged the likely nominee is state Rep. Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist leading in polls.
Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez also left the race recently, prompting Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley to rejoin with outgoing Gov. Tony Evers’ endorsement. Crowley aims for support from more moderate Democrats concerned about Hong’s electability against Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany.
Crowley is preparing an intensive campaign with Evers, which includes ads and events. He invited Barnes’ supporters to join his efforts through a message on X.
Hong, when questioned about seeking Barnes’ endorsement, stated she remains undecided but is open to welcoming all to her campaign.
