Sen. Mark Kelly Criticizes Far-Left Proposals for Affecting Democratic Image

Sen. Mark Kelly from Arizona expressed concerns during a recent interview with Katie Couric on “Next Question” about how far-left proposals are impacting the Democratic Party’s approval ratings. According to Kelly, calls to abolish the police, eliminate prisons and borders, and defund the Pentagon cause voters to associate these positions with the broader party.

“There are folks out there saying things that don’t make sense to Americans,” Kelly stated, referring to radical proposals that he believes voters link to the entire party.

Katie Couric asked Kelly about the potential impact of the Democratic Party’s ideological differences on the midterm elections and its 2028 presidential nominee. Kelly responded that these associations “could cost us some seats,” acknowledging a real possibility of losing electoral ground.

“That’s not the Democratic Party I’m in. Those aren’t the policies I support,” Kelly added, distancing himself from the party’s left-wing faction.

Polling data has reflected challenges for Democratic leaders, with a significant portion of voters viewing the party unfavorably. A Fox News poll showed 42% of registered voters had a favorable opinion while 58% did not. Furthermore, 61% believed Democrats focused on the “wrong” issues. Another poll from Quinnipiac University indicated only 20% approved of Congressional Democrats’ performance, with 72% disapproving.

Despite these issues, Democratic socialist candidates have seen success in primary elections. For example, DSA-backed Melat Kiros defeated Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado, and Darializa Avila Chevalier won against Rep. Adriano Espaillat in New York. Claire Valdez, also supported by the DSA, secured a primary victory in New York.

Sen. Kelly mentioned contemplating a 2028 presidential run. Encouraged by his wife, former Rep. Gabby Giffords, Kelly considers factors like family support and his chance of winning before deciding.

Kelly has shown a robust political effort, raising significant funds aimed at supporting realistic candidates, avoiding those with impractical platforms. He emphasized fundraising capability, stating his skill in raising substantial sums for candidate support.

Despite negative perceptions, recent Fox News polling provided some optimism for Democrats, showing a lead over Republicans by seven points among registered voters and high motivation levels among Democratic supporters.
