Elijah Bieniemy, son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, will only appear in court after completing a mental health competency evaluation, according to court documents. Elijah, aged 27, was apprehended on Monday, accused of shooting his mother, Mia, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds at their home in Ashburn, Virginia, on Sunday.
The Loudon County Sheriff’s Office reported that Elijah faces charges of malicious wounding, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling.
A court filing by Elijah’s public defender indicates that Elijah may suffer from severe mental health issues. The report suggests that he cannot currently assist in his own defense. The mental health competency evaluation has been approved, though a request for a mental health evaluation has been postponed temporarily.
Elijah’s preliminary court hearing is scheduled for September 9, shortly before the Kansas City Chiefs face the Denver Broncos on “Monday Night Football.” Meanwhile, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid provided an update during a media session, stating that Mia is recovering well. “She’s doing better and great from where she was,” Reid mentioned at training camp. “Out of the ICU unit, happy about that. EB is still with her. That part’s important.”
Following his arrest, Elijah was taken to the Loudon County Adult Detention Center and is being held without bond. The Chiefs’ coaching staff and team members will gather at Missouri Western State’s campus for training camp, with veterans having already reported.
Eric Bieniemy, aged 56, returned to the Chiefs as offensive coordinator this offseason. He has previously held roles with the Washington Commanders, Chicago Bears, and UCLA. During his tenure as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022, he managed one of the NFL’s most successful offenses and won Super Bowls.
