Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina is disregarding President Trump’s threat to withdraw Todd Blanche’s nomination for Attorney General. Tillis contends the White House should uphold its previous commitment to secure his support.
Tillis stated about Trump’s threat, “That’s his prerogative.” This followed Trump’s criticism of Tillis and Senator John Cornyn of Texas on social media for obstructing Blanche’s nomination. Trump threatened to pull Blanche’s nomination until both senators leave office next year.
“Negotiations are still in progress,” said Tillis about Trump’s threat to withdraw Blanche’s nomination.
Tillis noted, “The commitment from the administration needs fulfilling.”
Tillis is withholding support for Blanche’s nomination unless the administration agrees to eliminate a $2 billion anti-weaponization fund and amend Trump’s audit immunity language. These negotiations are ongoing.
He told Fox News Digital, “Take the win, get Blanche confirmed, and finalize the agreement.” When asked about confirming Blanche, Tillis replied, “exactly what Blanche committed to.”
Tillis also remarked that Blanche is not responsible for the stalemate. He believes Blanche was honest during the confirmation process, and faults someone within Trump’s circle.
“This isn’t Blanche’s issue,” Tillis said, adding, “Blanche was transparent working with us to resolve this.”
Tillis further noted, “One of Trump’s advisors is problematic, and they need to acknowledge it.”
He anticipated no more support for Blanche next year, with Republicans having more vulnerable Senate seats than Democrats.
“Best outcome is returning with the same numbers next year. Our members won’t be any more supportive,” Tillis commented.
Trump can keep Blanche as acting attorney general for months even if withdrawing the nomination. The Federal Vacancies Reform Act allows acting officials to serve for 210 days. Withdrawing resets this period. Blanche could remain until late February if withdrawn Thursday.
Tillis affirmed negotiations remain ongoing, not yet denying Blanche.
Tillis remarked, “Here, nothing is ever as good or bad as it appears; negotiations continue.”
