The Debut of the IR-28
This week marked the official unveiling of IndyCar’s anticipated new chassis, the IR-28. Photographs of the model were impressive, yet the true excitement came from witnessing it in action on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. Ed Carpenter Racing’s Alexander Rossi took the driver’s seat for initial tests over the weekend.
Preparation and Testing
Prior to the IR-28’s full introduction in 2028, extensive preparation is necessary, including the integration of updated engines from Chevrolet and Honda. Rossi expressed admiration for the efforts made in assembling the car for its preliminary run, noting the smooth progression of the launch.
“I’ve been a part of some new car launches before, and I can’t say that any have gone as smooth as this one has,” Rossi shared with IndyCar.com. “That’s down to everyone involved.”
This launch holds significance for drivers, fans, teams, and sponsors who have eagerly awaited the debut of the IR-28.
Weather Challenges
While the weather presented challenges, limiting Rossi’s track time during the test, he still recognized the differences the IR-28 brings to the series.
“It’s hard to do a full comparison because of the conditions we were dealing with, but everything you could hope for from a day like today was accomplished,” Rossi noted.
The IR-28 proved resilient, with only a single sensor replacement required during testing, illustrating the quality of the build.
Advancements and Expectations
The IR-28 represents IndyCar’s first new chassis since the DW12 debuted in 2012. It incorporates modern features, including an Aeroscreen and hybrid system, and is anticipated to be lighter, enhancing performance. Rossi reported positive initial results, expecting drivers to be eager to test it further.
Reigning series champion Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing is next to experience the IR-28 during a test at the IMS road course.
