Stephen Baldwin, known for his role in the Oscar-winning film The Usual Suspects, reflects on his decision to step away from Hollywood and pursue a life centered around faith. Baldwin shares his insights in a recent interview, explaining why he chose not to chase the path of becoming a major star.
Baldwin believes he could have aimed for stardom but chose a different path. He expressed to People magazine, ‘I didn’t want to be Tom Cruise, making $100 million at the box office. I’d rather be someone from Massapequa.’ Despite the potential for greater fame, Baldwin found his priorities shifting after embracing born-again Christianity in 2001.
His faith journey began when a Brazilian housekeeper, employed by Baldwin and his wife Kennya, disclosed she was guided by God to help them become Christians and start a ministry. At first skeptical, Baldwin’s views evolved after attending evangelical events with his sister.
Baldwin recalled, ‘They had skateboarders preaching evangelistically on the beach, attracting thousands of kids. This moment felt like a calling.’
Driven by this newfound passion, Baldwin produced a skateboard video with a Christian message, titled Livin’ It, distributing thousands of copies. A large church invited Baldwin to bring the skaters to their congregation. This led him to leave Hollywood and speak at 125 churches over four years.
Baldwin acknowledges that Hollywood has not always embraced his outspoken religious and political views, especially since his support for Donald Trump. Despite this, he remains content and grateful for the connections he has made through direct messages from fans who appreciate his work.
Currently, Stephen Baldwin focuses on creating faith-based films for younger audiences and hosts a podcast called ‘One Bad Movie’, where actors discuss negative film experiences. He also relishes being a grandfather and the perspective on life it’s given him, emphasizing his relationship with his wife and faith.
Baldwin affirms, ‘I’ve done 100 movies, made more money than I imagined, and married the most beautiful woman I know. Jesus is my rock. My wife is my anchor.’
