A couple from Wilmington, North Carolina, identified as Stephen Larnell Willetts and Tracey Parker Willetts, were found dead inside their home on Thursday. Authorities suspect a murder-suicide based on evidence gathered during the investigation.
The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office reported that Tracey is believed to have fatally shot Stephen before taking her own life. Emergency responders were alerted by an automated 911 call from a smartwatch that detected a fall after the alarm was not canceled.
The discovery came shortly after the couple’s 40th wedding anniversary, which they seemingly celebrated on Wednesday, as noted on their Facebook profiles.
According to social media posts and local news, the Willetts were well-known paddleboarders in the Wrightsville Beach area. Tracey was known for performing headstands on her paddleboard, and Stephen was an avid participant in the sport.
A neighbor mentioned Stephen’s past as a retired Army member. Moreover, a family member, Fuller Royal, who described himself as Tracey’s second cousin, expressed his grief on social media. He noted that the couple had endured significant personal tragedy, losing two sons within a year of each other in 2013 and 2014.
The investigation into the deaths is still in progress. Friends and community members mourn the loss, sharing memories of Stephen being a dedicated EMT and a lifelong friend to many.
