This incident was reported to the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) amid conflicting reports about Iran’s participation in peace talks with the United States.
President Donald Trump mentioned on Monday that a deal to fully reopen the Strait and denuclearize Iran was expected soon. However, details about the overnight incident were sparse. The UKMTO only disclosed that the vessel was struck by an ‘unknown projectile’ at about 2 a.m. local time, 23 miles northeast of Al Khasab in Oman. There was no information regarding the vessel’s identity or flag, nor were there any reports of injuries.
The British maritime security firm, Ambrey, confirmed damage to the ship but did not provide further details.
