The Trump administration has revealed the outcomes of its efforts to combat illegal immigration within the trucking industry. This initiative, known as Operation Highway Shield, was launched by the Department of Transportation (DOT) in Florida. Since then, it has been extended to several Midwest states, including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Ohio.
Operation Highway Shield conducted 3,487 enforcement stops. These operations led to 766 unsafe commercial vehicles or drivers being taken off the road, 51 immigration detentions, 47 criminal charges, 39 incarcerations, 36 English Language Proficiency (ELP) violations, and three cargo theft recoveries valued at approximately $1 million in stolen freight.
The Trump administration has emphasized that enforcing federal immigration and commercial driving laws is a key focus. In March, increased enforcement activities in Florida were reported, indicating that many truckers at some weigh stations failed to meet English proficiency standards. Master Trooper Craig Lents mentioned the importance of reading road signs at high speeds as a critical safety requirement.
In a documented case, a trucker failed to understand a road sign during a safety test, reflecting the ongoing challenges faced by non-English speaking drivers. Federal Motor Carrier Safety administrator Derek Barrs stressed the safety implications of English proficiency in avoiding and responding to accidents.
This enforcement initiative follows a number of fatal crashes across the nation. These crashes involved drivers alleged to be in the U.S. illegally or using commercial drivers’ licenses they should not possess. The Trump administration has pledged to continue its crackdown on illegal immigrants within the commercial driving sector.
