Las Vegas Officer Killed Responding to Armed Suspect Call

A Las Vegas police officer, who was a Marine veteran, was killed Tuesday while responding to a report of an armed individual, according to authorities. The incident also resulted in the suspect’s death.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported that officers and police drones were dispatched to a location in the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue just before 4 p.m. A caller had reported a person waving a firearm and appearing to be intoxicated.

Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill stated that an officer was injured in the shooting and was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officers encountered the armed suspect near Mountain Vista Street and the Interstate 11 underpass. The suspect fired at officers, prompting a response from at least one officer. The suspect was declared dead at the scene.

A 30-year-old officer, wounded in the incident, was taken to University Medical Center. Sheriff McMahill noted during a briefing, “A 30-year-old Las Vegas police officer was then worked on heroically by the Clark County Fire Department, other officers, and EMS. He was transported to UMC where nurses worked to save his life.”

The officer, a Marine veteran who joined the police department in November 2023, did not survive. Sheriff McMahill acknowledged the officer’s service, stating, “A person who served this country and this community. As you can imagine, I have lots of grieving police officers and a grieving community.”

The police department expressed condolences to the officer’s family and committed to offering support in the coming days. The suspect was declared dead at the location of the incident.

Many law enforcement agencies have expressed their sorrow over the officer’s passing. The Nevada State Police shared a statement on Facebook saying, “The Nevada State Police extends our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the fallen officer, and to our partners at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.”
